The physiological sigh:

A sigh is a particular breathing pattern when two inhales take place followed by a long exhale. It’s something we do all the time involuntarily- around every 5 minutes. Sighing is essential for lung function and without it our lungs would fail.

You can take this normal involuntary function and induce it intentionally to bring any levels of agitation down by stimulating your own respiratory sinus arrhythmia.

It's considered the fastest way to reduce stress in real-time, it's free. effective and there's empirical evidence for it.

    • Thanks @Mahmoud Jarhaman (MJ) for shring. This is very interesting clinically as well. Many time when we ask the patient if you feel "short of breath", they answer "yes". However, when you dig deep, they refer exactly to this type of sighs, which is really a shortness of breath.

      • Human physiology is interesting and this phenomenon is no exception .. Indeed, @Fathi Idris I tried to take something we already knew in a medical context and present it in a new context as a useful tip for the busy stressful life of a doctor .. Your comment is much appreciated!.

      • I totally agree. I have seen cases referred by medical professional with symptoms of "SOB", and when you talk to the patient, all they have are just physiological sighs!
